Nationwide strike called for tomorrow in solidarity with Palestinians
A group of Dhaka University students and student leaders have called for a nationwide general strike tomorrow, Monday, in solidarity with the Palestinians in protest against the ongoing destruction by Israeli forces in Gaza, Palestine. In solidarity with this call, many departments of the university have already announced to boycott classes and exams tomorrow.
A platform called ‘March for Palestine’ has called for a solidarity rally in all educational institutions of Bangladesh tomorrow against the genocide in Gaza and demanding an independent Palestine. They have announced a solidarity and protest rally in front of the Raju Statue of Dhaka University at 4 pm tomorrow. The platform announced the program in a message. The platform’s messenger and a student of the Law Department of Dhaka University, Rezwan Ahmed Rifat, said, ‘A global strike is being observed tomorrow against the ongoing genocide in Palestine. Solidarity rallies will be held in important cities including the UN office in New York. We are called upon to join hands with freedom-loving people all over the world to participate in this protest.’
Abu Sadiq Kayem, former president of the Dhaka University branch of Islami Chhatra Shibir, posted on his Facebook ID calling for the success of this program.
Meghmallar Basu, president of the Dhaka University branch of the Student Union, called for a nationwide strike tomorrow in a video message on Facebook. He said, ‘I would like to appeal to you to make this strike a success. Take the initiative to ensure that no educational institution in Bangladesh opens tomorrow, no school, college or university holds classes.’
On Sunday afternoon, two organizers of the ‘Awami League Ban Movement’, Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad and AB Zubair, also called on every department of Dhaka University to make this program a success.
In a Facebook post, AB Zubair said, ‘Our oppressed brothers and sisters in Gaza have called for a global strike tomorrow. They have called for a simultaneous closure of schools, colleges, universities, offices and courts in all countries of the world to demand an end to the genocide. Responding to their call, we are calling for a general strike in Bangladesh tomorrow as well. Tomorrow, you should close all educational institutions, factories, offices and courts. Boycott classes and exams. Let’s demand globally, Free Free Palestine.’
In the meantime, many departments including the Law Department, Economics Department, Arabic Department, Development Studies Department, Applied Mathematics, Psychology, Mass Communication and Journalism of Dhaka University have expressed solidarity with this program. Bangladesh Nationalist Chhatra Dal has announced a protest program condemning the brutal attack by the occupying Israeli forces on Gaza, Palestine. In a statement, protesting the Israeli aggression in Gaza, Chhatra Dal leaders said that it is not possible to express the condemnation of such terrible barbarity in words. As part of the program, Chhatra Dal will hold a joint protest rally in the heart of the city by wearing black clothes in front of all educational institutions of the country at 10:30 am on Tuesday and taking out a procession from all educational institutions of each city at 12:00 noon. The statement has requested all students and the public of the country to participate in the program.
